It doesn’t have to be this scary!

While I was huffing and puffing my way up the Stairmaster this morning I overheard (alright, I was eavesdropping – I needed something to help pass the time) two women speaking about their New Year Resolutions.  One woman said hers was to start saying “no” more (which I thought was actually a very good one) and the other women said her 2012 Resolution was to GET ORGANIZED (my ears perked up even more)!  Getting organized is always one of the top ten New Year Resolutions.  While I am all about setting and accomplishing goals, oftentimes a  resolution can be very overwhelming and disappointing  when January 4th  comes around and we’ve already broken that promise we made  to ourselves just days before.  I’ve done this many a time (save more money, workout more, stop eating so much chocolate) and it’s a bad feeling when you fail.

So as I climbed and climbed and sadly didn’t get anywhere I began thinking about setting a goal such as organizing and actually accomplishing it.  Then it dawned on me, I tell clients exactly this on a daily basis:  break down a big daunting task (i.e.: organizing your home) into smaller, more manageable parts.  Instead of looking at your whole home as one giant organizing project, just look at one small pile on your desk or a single shelf in your closet and start there.  You will be amazed at how much you can accomplish in just 20 minutes and that feeling of control and completion will motivate you to continue the project or move on to your next mini-project.  One of the most important things to remember as you embark on clearing the clutter:   if you only have 15 minutes tackle something as small as a junk drawer or kitchen cabinet.  Try to finish the project in the allotted time otherwise the momentum fades and that big cloud forms over your head and frankly it’s not a good look for anyone L

Now, what are you waiting for?  Go tackle that drawer that is too stuffed to close!  Maybe you will even accomplish your New Year’s Resolution before the ball drops.

A-Ha Organizing!

I must warn you, I’m a brand new blogger.  Something I’m not new at – organizing!  I’ve been getting organized since I was a child, not even fully aware of what organizing really was or why I “had” to do it.  I can even remember coming home from grade school and my Mom saying “Let’s get organized” as we would sit down to unload my backpack and begin homework.  Getting my chaos and disorganization under control and in perfect order were ingrained in me from such an early age that organizing has really become second nature (yes, that is really possible)!

After suffering a mild quarter-life crisis after my college graduation, I learned about organizing as a career. I “googled” it and learned that there was an entire industry devoted to professional organizing — this was my A-Ha Moment!  This is what I would do with my life –  help people get organized once and for all!  

I am so grateful that I love what I do for a living.  Sometimes I still can’t believe I get paid to help people get organized!  I’ve been helping clients declutter and maintain control of their life since ’05 and I truly believe this is my life’s work (ok, it sounds a little Oprah-esque, but it’s true). 

I’ve decided to start the Unapologetically Organized blog to share daily tips and tricks for getting organized and more importantly, STAYING ORGANIZED amongst other fun tidbits.  I really hope you enjoy the journey and hey, thanks for taking a second to read this.
